John studied visual arts at the Faculty of Creative Arts, University of Papua New Guinea, from 1989 to 1991. He graduated with Diploma gaining high distinction in Graphic Design and Photography. Prior to 1989, he studied and completed his Visual Arts Foundation Studies at the former National Arts School of Papua New Guinea (1988). John began his career in graphic design and graphic illustration, working firstly as a junior graphic designer with Independent Design in Badili. Later in 1993 he joined Acme Advertising as a senior graphic designer. When Acme merged with Savi Advertising in 1994 he was promoted to an Art Director position, specialising in print media.

In early 1995 John left Savi Advertising and was engaged as a senior graphic designer for ‘Destination Papua New Guinea’, a one volume fact book and encyclopedia commemorating PNG’s 20th Independence Anniversary, September 1995. Whilst working on this project he developed and grew his strong understanding of book design and publishing, having worked and collaborated with international BBC writers from London including art directors and designers from Iceland. The Destination PNG project took John across the globe to London and then all the way to Reykjavik, Iceland, where he spent one month working along side with some of Icelandic talented graphic designers, together with London based former BBC writers, thereby gained knowledge and skills in design and printing processes of book publishing.

John has also established good working relationship with overseas Printers in Singapore, gained valuable print management experience through liaising with these printers on clients projects by actually traveled and met them on-site in Brisbane, Laidley and Singapore. Apart from that, he attended specific training courses in website designing and development in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne. He was selected in 1999 for a month in Internet Internship Programme for Pacific Island countries held in Wellington, New Zealand, sponsored by UNESCO. In 1990 whilst as a 3rd year student at the Faculty of Creative Arts, he was selected and represented PNG attended a training course in Creative Photography and Darkroom Techniques facilitated by former South Pacific Commission in Suva, Fiji.
